In this BFDG award-winning commercial, the brief was to design a Mars-bound spaceship that felt both softer in form and grounded in reality. What followed was a fast-paced, highly collaborative build that brought together physical set construction, virtual production and mixed reality workflows within an ambitious 7-week prep and 1-week shoot.

Working across disciplines from the outset, the design approach split the production pipeline: key environments such as Martian interiors and Mission Control were delivered through virtual production, while the spaceship interiors and supporting builds were realised physically, in-camera. Early alignment with the director, producer, agency and client was critical; using sketches, 3D models and AR visualisation to secure rapid sign-off and ensure all departments were working in sync.

The use of mixed reality tool NOOR allowed the team to pre-visualise complex builds, including stunt integration and lighting, before fabrication began, reducing risk in a tightly constrained schedule. At the same time, close collaboration with VFX teams ensured a seamless relationship between practical elements and digital extensions, from Martian landscapes to 2.5D matte environments.

Blending traditional craft with emerging technology, the project is a clear example of how today’s designers are navigating hybrid workflows, building worlds that exist simultaneously on stage, on screen and in real time.
