Set & Scene 2026 launches new sustainable design scene for film, theatre and live events

Set & Scene 2026 is the UK’s first cross-industry gathering to unite designers, makers, producers, and suppliers from film, television, theatre, live events, and immersive experiences in one space to explore sustainable design, materials, and construction. The event will take place on 25 April 2026 at Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London, Granary Square, London.

For the first time, professionals across traditionally separate creative sectors will meet under one roof to see materials in action, discuss practical workflows, and explore innovative sustainable construction methods. The programme features panel discussions, live demonstrations, and supplier showcases, providing inspiration, practical guidance, and career development opportunities.

A standout feature is the cardboard engineering build – a guided tour around a set built by JOHNNY MANN SCENIC SERVICES LTD, with materials supplied by Macfarlane Packaging. The tours will be led by Paul Galloway and Andrew Patrick.

Productions like Good Omens are already demonstrating how cardboard sets can be large-scale, cost-effective, fully recyclable, and dramatically lower in carbon footprint. This hands-on demonstration will show attendees how sustainability can be integrated into their workflows without compromising creativity or scale.

“Set & Scene offers an unparalleled opportunity for designers and all industry professionals to witness firsthand how innovative approaches like cardboard engineering can transform our practices,” said Production Designer, Michael Ralphs.

Set & Scene 2026 also features:

  • The Dye Garden: interactive plant-based colouring sessions with National Theatre and Glyndebourne
  • The Creative Circular Economy and Zero Waste sessions: asset sharing, reuse, and modular workflow strategies with organisations such as Restage, CAMA Assetstore and USED Creative
  • Building Resilient Careers: practical advice on wellbeing and sustainable professional practices, sponsored by Solas Mind

With panels, supplier showcases, and tech demonstrations, the event is a unique opportunity to see materials and technologies in action, meet the innovators behind them, and explore circular and sustainable practices first-hand.
