Susie Carlino’s career grew out of a lifelong intrigue with fabric and how it is used to create the overall atmosphere of a space. After graduating in 1989 from Middlesex University with a degree in Textiles and Fashion, she was quickly enticed by the creative possibilities of textiles and their ability to transform various environments, cementing her love for fabrics and constructed textile design.
Susie’s first job after university placed her at the heart of London’s music scene as a barmaid at the legendary Marquee Club in Soho. Through her job, she was given an early look into the power of lighting, staging and atmosphere in live events. That exposure led to a role with Halo Lighting, where she worked as a draping events producer. Collaborating with lighting designers on stage shows such as “The Crazy Club” at the London Astoria, she quickly learned how textiles and lighting could work together to transform empty rooms into immersive spaces.
A year on, Susie took the plunge and teamed up with a close friend and graphic designer to launch S.M.Arties (Susie and Mandie Arties), producing decor and installations for rave culture and large-scale events. The work gave her freedom to equipment – creating striking installations that brought shape, atmosphere and texture to every venue.
With more than two decades in the events industry, Susie Carlino has built an international reputation for transforming spaces through fabric, light and design. Her work spans weddings, music festivals, corporate events, film premieres and award ceremonies, with clients including the BBC, Claridge’s, Harrods, Glastonbury Festival and the 2012 London Olympics. Alongside her design, consultation and installation work, Susie now shares her expertise through the Creative Draping Academy, where she teaches the techniques behind her craft. An artist, interior designer and event specialist, she approaches every project as an installation, creating spaces defined by texture, atmosphere and imagination.
